In This Picture:
The bride and groom have been pinned with money from their family and friends on their wedding day. The money has been pinned in vertical lines just like The Michealides Wedding Dance. Different methods of giving money to the bride and groom (like throwing it in the air) can be viewed in other blog posts including Greek Wedding Dance, Flying Money and Money on the Floor. All of these pictures show a lot of money being given as a gift to the bride and groom but how much money should someone give?
Is there a particular amount a guest should give to the bride and groom? Does the amount differ if you are related to the couple?

The origination of the money comes from when a couples’ family pins GOLD LIRAs (Gold Coins) in a small cloth onto the bride and on the groom’s lapel. The symbol is to have a golden life together. The Throwing of the money is symbolically well wishing the couple for wealth withini their marriage, however in most cases both in Greece and in United States. Money that is being thrown remains and belongs to the Band of the evening. In Greece the band in most cases is not paid but relies on the throwing of the money for services. This is the same for the United States.

This is considered bad taste in Greece. In the past parents used to hang golden liras on the bride’s neck. However being pinned with money is not appropriate.
