I thought it was strange that my yia yia’s wore a pearl ring on her wedding finger and then i recently discovered that this is a normal custom in Greece.
According to a website i found (jewllery catalogue), pearls used to be more valuable than diamonds. This is because when pearls first arrived in Europe from the Middle East, they were more expensive.
The pearl is known as the “stone of sincerity” and it promote faith, charity, innocence, integrity, truth and loyalty.
Do you prefer diamonds or pearls for your engagement ring?

I just found your blog and wanted so say, awesome. It’s cool to see someone else taking the time and putting so much effort behind such a beautiful tradition as a Greek wedding. I wish you all the best of luck with your blog.
And yes I’m Greek

The “diamond engagement ring” according to college marketing classes is the biggest, most successful marking ad campaign in history with the slogan “A diamond is forever”.
A man discovered a huge diamond mine about 70 years ago. He wanted to make his excessive diamonds more desirable. So he realized that if we attach sentiment to an object it has more value. So he marketed the idea, of “isn’t she worth it?” so he could charge more for the diamonds, and then came up with the 2 months salary rule. Some countries more, some countries less. Japan was 3 months, Germany was 1 month. This was all part of his marketing genius idea to make the diamond the most sought out stone in the world. Personally, because of this…I’ll take the pearl any day.
