Greek tradition, originally uploaded by stefanlaketa.
In This Picture:
The bride is being pinned with money on her wedding day.
Can anyone tell what kind of currency is being pinned to this Greek bride?
I was watching the wedding video of my cousins Jimmy and Maria and i noticed that the guests were throwing coins at them during their first dance. All the kids were racing around to pick up the coins like it was a game. When i asked about this, my thea told me it was a ‘Kazzi’ tradition.
I am getting a new DVD burner and so i should be able to upload some of these old video clips onto my blog soon.
What is the real name of the Island that the ‘Kazzies’ come from?
Who keeps the coins… the kids or the bride & groom?
Many people say that the pinning of money on the bride and groom is a Cypriot tradition, but my parents did it and they are not Cypriot. Many other non Cypriots have told me the same thing. So when is it appropriate to pin money?
Ted says: “People wait to see whether the bride’s family starts it off, then close relatives, then friends. Sometimes they pin may notes together and pin one end to the bride and the other to the groom. Other times they put the money and a card in an envelope and pin that to the brides dress.”
Questions:
What is the best way to stick the money together into those long strips?
Are you a bride that has experienced this? Did it spoil your dress? Could you still dance?
How long does the money stay pinned on the dress for?
Can you use any form of money? Cheques? $5 notes? Coins?
Watch this short clip from you tube!
Why spoil the dress? Just throw the money around in the air
This wedding looks like an Greek-American wedding. I have noticed that the Americans like to throw the money around the dance floor rather than pinning it to theĀ bride and groom.
Here are some other posts of Greek-American’s throwing money around:
